Life in a Cressida Campbell print

It is one of my great aspirations, when I am old and indisputably wealthy, to live in a Cressida Campbell woodblock print. Maybe not literally, but there is something so luminous about her interior images that it reminds you of all the warmth, comfort and contentment you can derive from surrounding yourself in a beautiful environment  of colour, textiles, and pattern. It has also only struck me recently how frequently she features ceramics in her works.

There is something about the colours and subject of her work that reminds me of Matisse, whom I lovelovelove infinitely, but there is a bit more realism in the detailing and forms; you can feel the Margaret Preston still life influence filtering through. Campbell is an Australian artist and she makes all her works through a highly skilled and labour intensive application of woodblock carving. Artists tend to have slightly varying methods but for those who don’t know too much about the process, outlines of an image are pencilled onto a wooden surface and then carved out before various colours are applied directly onto the wood. This is then pressed onto paper (usually) and the end result is a mirror image of the carving. If you ever made lino cuts in high school, it’s very similar.

Campbell preserves the individual value of each piece as she only ever makes a single print of any one wood carving. She also has a coffee-table-esque book out which documents an intensely comprehensive collection of her best works. I want it quite badly but am struggling to find the money because I am STILL yet to harness my uncontrollable topshop addiction. Having said that, buying the book will probably be as close as I’ll be able to get to owning anything of hers (at least for the next 5-10 foreseeable years).
